Start with the total power budget

Add the maximum power draw of every AP, then multiply by a 1.2–1.3 safety factor to get the minimum PoE budget. Note that rated AP power is usually an average — inrush current at start-up is higher.

  • 802.3af delivers up to 15.4W per port, 802.3at (PoE+) up to 30W
  • Plan PoE+ for high-power Wi-Fi 6/7 APs
  • Outdoor models with heating or protection modules draw more

Leave headroom in port count

Size port count 20–30% above the number of APs and reserve at least one uplink port. For phased projects, choose stackable switches or deploy per floor.

Cable, distance and protection

Use Cat5e or better twisted pair, with each run under 100m. Outdoor runs need lightning protection and grounding; for inter-building links, prefer wireless bridges or fibre to avoid ground potential differences.
